How to choose

Lumens vs lux

Lumens are total output; lux is light on the road at a distance. A well-shaped 800 lm beam can beat a round 1,500 lm one.

Beam cut-off

A flat-topped beam puts light on the road, not in drivers' eyes. German StVZO-style optics are the gold standard on busy roads.

Runtime

Check runtime in the mode you'll actually use, not the lowest flash mode on the box.

Daytime flash

A bright daytime flash front and rear makes you visible in low winter sun and grey weather.

UK law

After dark you need a white front light, red rear light, red rear reflector and amber pedal reflectors. Flashing lights are allowed if they meet the minimum output.

Quick questions

How many lumens do I need?

As a rough guide, a few hundred lumens is enough to be seen on lit roads and around 600 or more suits unlit lanes, with more for fast riding in the dark. Beam shape matters as much as the number.

Do I need a daytime flash?

It helps. A bright daytime flash front and rear makes you more visible in low winter sun and grey weather, and Cycling Weekly notes every light in its 2026 test group includes one.

Front, rear, or both?

Both. After dark you legally need a white front light and a red rear light, plus a red rear reflector and amber pedal reflectors.
