How to choose

Gauge accuracy

If you set pressure carefully, a precise gauge matters. Cycling Weekly singles out one pump as most accurate.

Head and valve

Check it fits Presta and Schrader, and that the head locks on securely so it doesn't leak while you pump.

Max pressure

Road tyres commonly run around 70 to 100 psi. Almost every floor pump goes well beyond that.

Tubeless

High-volume pumps inflate quickly, but seating a tubeless tyre often needs a booster or compressor.

Quick questions

What pressure should I run?

It depends on tyre width, rider weight and conditions, and it's usually lower than people expect. Never exceed the maximum printed on the tyre sidewall.

Is a floor pump better than a mini pump?

Yes at home: it's faster and more accurate. Keep a mini pump for the road.
